The Eco-Stewards Program
“Give someone who is hungry a fish and they will eat for a day, teach them to fish and they will eat for a lifetime.”
Unknown
‘Come O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was imprisoned and you came to see me.’
Matthew 25: 34-36
Eco-Stewards Programs are designed to provide youth with the skills and experience necessary to make a tangible improvement in the environment and on the lives of others in response to God’s call.
During the first phase of the program, young adults will participate in training experiences and will learn by completing a project such as solar water-heaters, composting toilets, or soil conservation. They will also receive education in the theological call to care for creation.
In phase two, trained eco-stewards who have participated in phase one, will teach others at a different site by repeating the project they completed in phase one.
Our hope is that students who complete the Eco-Stewards Program will continue to share their knowledge in many ways. Maybe they will travel oversees and repeat the training experience. Or maybe they will travel to churches, schools, and other gatherings sharing their experience with others and inspiring others to get active in responding to God’s call.
Once trained and inspired, young adults will incorporate eco-stewardship into their daily lives, and actively work to share that knowledge with others.
An integral part of our program requires participants to share the experience by talking to their church and Presbytery before and after the experience so others may be inspired.
