Eco-Stewards East 2008
The Eco-Stewards East program program was two-fold; the group started training at Camp Lackawanna in Tunkhannock, PA amidst the the Endless Mountains and ended with a service project at Holmes Center in Holmes, NY in the Hudson River Valley.
At Camp Lackawanna the group participated in the eco-stewardship curriculum, which ranges from classes, interactive workshops, community building activities, and self reflection. Participants developed their eco-testimonies, examined Celtic spirituality, took a class on Eco-Theology and Ethics, explored the various modes of learning and group communication models, studied the structure of the Presbyterian Church and learned about making effective change. They also attended the the Vos Burg Neck Sustainability Festival, a two day festival on the grounds of the camp with an emphasis on energy issues and sustainability. Participants chose from seminars about wind power, mountaintop removal, and nuclear energy. They also enjoyed bird walks, forest ecology tours, and kayaked the Susquehanna River. The Eco-Stewards also helped lead part of the Sunday outdoor worship.

At Holmes Center the Eco-Stewards took a field trip to the Bronx, NY where they observed the environmental issues affecting low-income communities. They visited Youth Ministries for Peace and Justice, which is an interfaith community building, activism, and outreach center working to empower young adult leaders within the Bronx. The head of the center led a canoe trip on the Bronx River, to demonstrate the water supply affected by the poor sewer drainage system and the little attention low-income communities like the Bronx get. Later that week the Eco-Stewards also toured a local organic farm CSA that provides healthy, organic food to shelters and low-income ares of New York. The experience concluded with a service project at Holmes Center in which the Eco-Stewards helped lead a high school in gardening, cleaning, beautifying, and helping to sustain the Holmes grounds.
